Five remarkable young Baltimoreans are the recipients of Memorial’s 2025 Young Scholar Award, a $2500 college scholarship offered by our church to outstanding Baltimore City public high school students.

Applicants must be in their senior year at a high school in the Baltimore City public school system, have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better, have been accepted to a four-year college or university, and have submitted a personal essay. A small committee of Church members review the applications and select awardees based on their academic achievement, community service, and financial need.

This year’s awardees are all members of the class of 2025. Two of this year’s awardees are graduates at Baltimore City College (BCC), a citywide college preparatory institution with selective admissions and an emphasis on the liberal arts and sciences: Two are graduates of Baltimore Polytechnic Institute. One of the awardees is a graduate of the 2024 class at Baltimore City College who also received a scholarship last year.

  •  Helena Solefack Momo is a graduate of Baltimore Polytechnic Institute, and she  will be attending the University of Maryland College Park, with an intended major in public health science. She wants to pursue a career in medicine, public health, and social policy, working to make healthcare more equitable for all. She was a member of the National Honor Society, InteGIRLS Baltimore Chapter, the African Student Association, and she was co-founder and co-president of Ingenuity Women in STEM Engagement. Her essay for her scholarship application was entitled "Giving Back What Was Given."

Kaila Jenkins is a graduate of Baltimore Polytechnic Institute, and she will be attending Johns Hopkins University. She intends to major in applied mathematics, and she wants to pursue a career in medicine as an anesthesiologist. She was a student ambassador, senior class student advisor, varsity softball player, and a member of various clubs in school, including the ski club, chess club, and track & field. She is a youth worship leader at New Freedom Church and Ministries, and she performs gospel rap and spoken word poetry.

Damon Rowlett is a graduate of Baltimore City College, and he will be attending the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. He was a member of the track & field team, the choir, the Men of Valor Club, and the varsity basketball team. At UMES, he intends to major in engineering, and his career goals include developing sustainable energy technologies for underserved communities, improving access to electricity in remote areas, and designing efficient and affordable systems for schools and hospitals.

Asha Freeland is a graduate of Baltimore City College, and she will be attending Towson University. She intends to pursue a degree in nursing. She was a member of the Sutton Scholars High School Enrichment Program sponsored by the Episcopal Diocese of Maryland. She also participated in a number of community service activities. She is the granddaughter of Evelyn Fitzgerald, a beloved member of Memorial Church who passed away in 2019.

Endia Evans is a graduate of Baltimore City College, and she will be starting her second year at Spelman College. She received the Memorial Episcopal Church Young Scholar Award last year, and due to her outstanding academic record, she was again awarded a scholarship this year. At Spelman, she is a health science major on the pre-med track, and she was on the Dean's List in her first year, as well as being inducted into the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society for First-Year Success. Combining rigorous academics with her passion for service and leadership, she participated in a variety of campus organizations, including the National Council of Negro Women, the Spelman Health Careers Club, and the Minority Association of Pre-Medical Students (MAPS), where she accepted a position as Co-Community Service Chair on the Executive Board for the 2025-2026 academic year.

We know the Memorial community joins us in applauding the achievements of these five outstanding young people.
